Damien took the pot of the stove and carefully walked to over to the table. “You just have to try this soup,” he said. 

After the three hours in the car that it took to get to the ranch, Damien was eager to do something. With our bags still in the trunk he exclaimed, “Let’s go riding!” 

As Damien turned out the light he asked, “What do you think about going canoeing on Sebago tomorrow? 

“I signed us up to help with the food drive,” Damien said. “I know how that’s one of your favorite things to do during the holidays.” 

Damien looked at me over his Down East magazine and said, “You know, I think this spring would be a great time for us to start composting.” 

Damien couldn’t resist pointing out that whenever I came in from gardening I always had dirt on my face. 

As the sun started setting, I thought to myself, there really isn’t a more comforting sound than Damien chopping wood for the woodpile…
